New Appointments to WelTec and Whitireia Council

Media Release: 12 March 2014

Roger Sowry, Chair of the Council of WelTec and Whitireia today announced the appointment of Fran Wilde to the institutions’ governing body. “I am very pleased to announce Fran’s appointment and grateful to her for accepting this new role particularly given her busy schedule as Chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council,” says Mr Sowry.

“The combined Council of Whitireia and WelTec lead vocational tertiary education provision across the Wellington region. Fran’s whole of region approach sits well with the Council’s combined view and oversight of two large institutions - WelTec and Whitireia. Her background in tourism and promoting Wellington will be invaluable as we strive to make Wellington the destination of choice for international students,” says Mr Sowry.

In December Hon Steven Joyce, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment announced a new Ministerial appointment to the combined Council, Dr Deborah Hume. Deborah is responsible for Wellington’s Metro train operations (Tranz Metro) and New Zealand’s long-distance passenger train services (Scenic Journeys). This takes the number of appointees to the eight-member Council to seven.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our outgoing Councillors who have served on the Council of WelTec and Whitireia since the combined Council was established in 2010,” said Mr Sowry.
