Introducing Joany Grima, WelTec’s specialist Event Management tutor. Joany has an extensive work history in event management all around the world, and maintains a strong industry presence.
Joany has worked in a vast range of event management roles for high profile organisations, including Amnesty International, The Cancer Council Victoria, Massey University, Creative New Zealand, and The New Zealand Festival. She was also involved in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and the FIFA under 17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in 2008.
In 2005 Joany was awarded a scholarship through the Maltese High Commission, which granted her the opportunity to work in Malta at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting as part of the organising task force. This led to her taking on the role of event manager for the Commonwealth People’s Forum between 2007 and 2015. The role has allowed Joany to work across the globe, as the biennial event is held in a different country each time. For this year’s event (held in London), she has been engaged as a technical advisor.
“I’ve been fortunate to see some of the world through my career; and to live and work in five continents.”
Starting at WelTec in 2010, Joany was employed to deliver the institution’s first Event Management courses. She has designed and developed the curriculum, the assessments, and worked out her own style of teaching. Her courses are focused on Event Planning, Logistics, Marketing and Sponsorship, and Event Project - where students deliver a real-life event.
Joany enjoys teaching something that is so practical in nature, and says she is constantly learning from her students – “it’s a two-way street.” “I enjoy interacting with the students, that energy in class, watching their confidence and capability grow and seeing them develop into event managers.”
Joany is in close contact with industry colleagues, many of whom are her graduates, and regularly invites them to come in and add value to what the students are learning; “industry informs what we teach.”
“It’s satisfying to see so many of my students going on to great roles in industry. Students I’ve taught are working in exciting event management roles across the world.”
Since 2015, Joany and WelTec tutor Leanne Nicholas have been undertaking a research project on waste minimisation practices at festivals in New Zealand. Findings of the research has been disseminated to industry via the Waste Minimisation New Zealand Conference and the New Zealand Local Government Magazine.
Through WelTec, Joany was able to gain international teaching experience by going on a six-month academic exchange to Canada in 2017, where she worked at Camosun College in Victoria, BC. While in Canada Joany was also able to internationalise her research by attending local festivals to compare New Zealand data with Canada.
Joany has completed a Bachelor of Arts in TV Production, a Graduate Diploma in Arts Management, and a Master in Business Studies Majoring in Communications (thesis topic: Comparing the approach of two local councils and their investment in community events). She also has a Certificate in Adult Education.
