Civil engineering student Amy Sutherland is the 2018 Graduate Women Wellington Scholarship winner.

AMY engineering scholarship 2 of 2

Amy, who is in the second year of her Bachelor of Engineering Technology Degree at WelTec, is passionate about the environment and has a keen interest in the use of water as a natural resource.

“Water is so accessible, it’s an intrinsic part of our daily lives and is almost an invisible resource, but it impacts on everything we do.  Water supply influences where you live, where you build, it impacts everything we work on and everything we touch.  Roads, bridges, sewerage systems, pipelines – the design, construction and maintenance of the physical environment is influenced by water.”

“I’m interested in the changing uses of water and looking at water as a resource, as a highly valued commodity.  I’m keen to engage in a dialogue with people about the impact of their activities on water usage and look at how that influences the natural and built environment.”

Interested in maths and Lego as a kid, Amy was always keen on structures and systems and how we live our lives.  With a Bachelor of Science and Primary Teaching qualification Amy wanted to take the next step on her learning journey applying her skills and interest in the environment by choosing a degree that is known for its practical application. The Bachelor of Engineering Technology was the ideal choice.

With the second year of her Engineering Degree about to begin, Amy is looking forward to studying with financial assistance.  “It’s great knowing that the interview panel has confidence in my abilities and has recognised I’m determined to achieve my study goals.  The scholarship will help to support me to study full-time.”

Director Academic Dr Ruth Anderson says,

Amy was an outstanding candidate among many other talented young women who competed for the Graduate Women Wellington Scholarship.  She demonstrates strong leadership, a commitment to her chosen profession, and an ability to make a significant contribution to engineering and the wider community.

Graduate Women Wellington is a proud supporter of scholarships to WelTec and Whitireia that provide financial assistance to women undertaking study in areas which are under-represented by women.
