Guide to ICT services

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guides are available at ICT Services Information and Self-Help Guides. These guides give step-by-step instructions for Logins, WiFi, Printing, Office365, Email, Security, File Systems, Mahara, Moodle and Turnitin.

You must use ICT services at Whitireia and WelTec responsibly and appropriately. More detailed information can be found here: Taikura A5 R1 Student Rights and Responsibilities

If you have any difficulties, require assistance or have a query, contact either the Student Helpdesk or:

Setup your accounts

  1. Login to a computer on campus using your default login and password.
  2. Change your password - it must be at least 8 characters long, contain both UPPERCASE and lowercase letters, and at least one number or symbol. 
  3. Setup your email: go to https://outlook.office.com and use your WelTec or Whitireia email address to setup your account.
  4. Register your account so that you can recover your password if you forget it.
  5. Use your email address to connect your own devices to the WiFi eduroam.
  6. Use your email address to access Office 365 Online.

Student login

You will be given a computer login, default password, and email account once you have accepted your offer of place on your programme. You will need to come into one of the campuses to login for the first time, and you will be prompted to change the password to one of your own choice.

Your default login

WelTec: Firstname.surname00x

(00x  is a number that you will be notified of on enrolment. Use first 3 letters of each name).  e.g. Christopher Richardson, whose enrolment letter gives him the number 003, has a default login of christop.richards003)

Whitireia Student ID number eg 21800352

 

Your default password

WelTec: WelTecStudent ID, eg WelTec21800352

Whitireia your date of birth (ddmmyy) and your Student ID with a dash, eg 031199-2180035 

 

Student email

You will need to set up your student email, even if you do not intend to use it on a regular basis.

Your institutional email address is:

WelTec: firstname.lastname00x@student.weltec.ac.nz

Whitireia: firstname.lastname@whitireianz.ac.nz

 

Register your account

One of the FIRST THINGS you SHOULD DO once you get logged into a machine is to follow this link: tiny.cc/registerpass

  • Register your account with the Microsoft password system. This will allow you to reset your own password or unlock your account if you forget it. This will require either a mobile number or alternate email address for security purposes.
  • If you forget your password, got to https://tiny.cc/resetpass and follow the instructions.

WiFi

  • The WiFi network is eduroam.
  • Your login is your institution email address, your password is the same one you use for the computer network.
  • On Android deveices you may need to change "Phase 2 authentication" to MSCHAPV2. And on Apple devices accept the certificates
  • REMINDER: when changing your computer network password, remember to update the same password on your mobile devices.

Office 365 Online

Office 365 Education for Students’ (Office) is provided free for all students to use. Office 365 Online provides access to email, Microsoft Office applications and file storage via OneDrive all online.  You can install Office on up to five PCs or Macs and mobile devices, including your smart phone and tablets.

BE SECURE! Viruses and malicious software are capable of destroying your work, stealing your personal information, and disrupting your access to ICT services. Email and poor passwords are the main gateway. See our Security information for some quick tips to help keep your information safe!

Flexible Learning: Moodle

Moodle is a learning management system which is used to support your learning, and lets you access course information, instructions for assessments, readings and other things useful for your study.

To access Moodle:

  • On the Whitireia and WelTec websites, you will find Moodle at the bottom of the page, on the right-hand side. Click on the word to follow the link.
  • Login with your default login.

When you have successfully logged into Moodle, your courses will display on the Dashboard page.  Click on your course name to access your Moodle pages.

The Student Helpdesks provide support for using Moodle, including password resets. 

Printing, photocopying and scanning

You will have access to photocopying, scanning and printing facilities using Multi-Functional Devices (MFDs) – Full information available here. MFDs are situated in various areas around each campus including each campus library. Use your student ID card to login to the MFDs.

We use a system called SmartPrint which allows you to pick up your printing from any printer on that campus. Smart_Print is setup as the default printer on all student computers. 

You are charged for photocopying and printing. Scanning is free of charge.

You can ‘top up’ the credit on your account at:

  • kiosks at Learning Commons (Level 2) at the Petone Campus, Te Kete Wānanga at the Porirua campus, and Level 3 at Te Kahui Auaha
  • Student Helpdesks or the reception desk at the hospitality campus in Wellington

Some of your classes or programmes may have social media pages and groups. Using social media for your study can be beneficial, and we encourage and promote the positive aspects of social media and shared learning. 

It is important that you are courteous, responsible and respectful with the content you share and comments you make. This will ensure that everyone has a positive experience on your class social media pages and groups. Here are some tips on Net Etiquette that you can use to guide how you use or interact on social media. 

You have a responsibility to not bully or discriminate against any student or staff member on Whitireia or WelTec-affiliated social media communities. If you are responsible for or involved in the bullying or discrimination against any student or staff member you may undergo disciplinary actions (see above). 

If you are ever made to feel uncomfortable or have a complaint about content on a Whitireia or WelTec programme social media page or group, we encourage you to talk to a trusted tutor, a support services staff member or one of our advocacy services.  If, after discussing the issue, you wish to make a complaint under the Terms and Conditions of use of the Digital Forums and the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015 (HDCA) you can email hdccomplaints@w2sharedservices.ac.nz.
