What you will learn

One course covers specific animal care knowledge and skills, including:

  • Gain an introduction to pet first aid and animal health issues
  • Learn to read animal respiration/heart rate charts
  • Build customer service and record management skills
  • Become familiar with animal care legislation, including welfare and professional conduct

Three further courses cover the following topics to prepare the student for further study and career options:

  • Develop academic communication skills 
  • Become familiar with the Treaty of Waitangi as it relates to health and social practice.
  • Introduction to ethics in health and social practice.
  • Learn mammalian (mammals) anatomy and body systems that can then be related to animals and human.
  • Build customer service and record management skills
  • Perform calculations and analyse data
  • Plan your career, develop a CV and prepare for workplace interviews

Entry criteria

New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3) or equivalent study/work experience.

International students

Minimum IELTS (academic) score of 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5, or equivalent.
