FAQs for WelTec and Whitireia Free Bus Service

How do I recognise the WelTec and Whitireia free bus? What does it look like?

The service is being provided by Mana Coach Services. Mana will have an electronic banner with the destination saying “Whitireia Porirua”, “WelTec Petone” and “WelTec\Whitireia Wgtn”. Look out for this.

How often does the bus service run?

There are services throughout the day connecting our Wellington, Porirua and Petone campuses. The service departs from Wellington (Victoria Street Stop 6708) to Porirua (2871) and Petone (Cuba Street Stop 9008).

Do I need ID for the bus?

Yes you will need to show the bus driver your WelTec or Whitireia student ID. Computer Power Plus students can show their student ID.

What if I don’t have my student ID?

You will be able to board the bus for the first week without your ID, but after that you will need to have it with you. If you have lost your ID please visit one of our campuses to arrange a replacement.

Does the service run at the weekend and on Public Holidays?

No the bus service will not be running at the weekend or on Public Holidays even though our campuses may be open. Information about hours and days our campuses are open can be found on our websites.

If there is no room on the bus what do I do?

You can still board the bus and stand. (There is a maximum loading).
If you have a disability and need a seat please let the bus driver know.

If the bus driver doesn’t pick me up what do I do?

If you cannot wait until the next free bus service to get to campus you will need to make other arrangements.

Is there WiFi on the bus?

Not at this stage. The free bus service is a trial service.

Is there somewhere to put large carry-on items?

Please let the bus driver know as you board the bus. The bus driver will be able to store large items for you so they don’t take up space on the bus.

Can children travel on the bus?

You are welcome to bring your children on the bus if you are dropping them off to childcare or one of our early childhood centres. They may need to sit on your knee if there is limited space. The bus driver will advise about this. Unaccompanied minors (ages 5 to 12) are not allowed on the bus. Trades Academy students travel on a separate bus.

Can other people get on the bus with me?

Only children as noted above or other students (with their ID) can get on the bus.

Are pets allowed on board?

Guide dogs for the blind or hearing impaired and companion dogs (assistance dogs) are allowed to travel on the bus. Assistance dogs should be on a harness, have a certificate confirming the status of the assistance dog and be under your control. You must follow the instructions of staff and failure to do this will mean the dog will not be allowed to travel. Owners will be required to clean up any mess that their dogs may have caused.

Can I take food or drink on the bus?

Yes if it is in your bag. You cannot eat or drink while you are on the bus.

Can I play music on the bus?

Yes if it doesn’t disrupt the driver or other passengers.
